Personal information
Lucien Grodwohl broke both legs during the sinking of FFL Sergent Gouarne and spent almost a day drifting in his Mae West until being rescued. He later told his son Michel that he only survived the sinking because he was lookout on the roof as punishment after it was discovered that his friends and him were breeding rats in hidden cages - the reward for each dead rat was 1/4 liter wine. Lucien remained in hospital in Gibraltar to recover from his severe injuries for the rest of the war.
