Personal information
Thomas L. Cunning served in the US Navy from 23 September 1943 to 12 July 1946. He was on watch as Armed Guard when Thomas Donaldson was hit by a torpedo. Thrown into the air by the explosion he landed against smoke stack and slid down to the deck. When ordered to abandon ship Thomas pulled down the flag, grabbed a sack of potatoes and left the ship. He brought the flag home with him.
