Personal information
Michael John Curtis had already survived the loss of Pyrrhus when he also survived the sinking of Memnon and was subsequently interned by the Vichy French at Dakar. As he was not yet 18 years old he was released after six weeks and eventually joined Talthybius which was sunk during a Japanese air raid on Singapore on 3 February 1942. Michael and his ship mates then formed part of the crew of the requisitioned river steamer HMAS Ping Wo during her escape to Australia via Java.
