Personal information
James Stanley Renfrew joined the Merchant Navy and went to the Firemen’s Training School at Newcastle-upon-Tyne. His first ship was the Empire Union, which he joined as she was leaving Methil, to replace a stoker who was being escorted off the ship. James survived being sunk on his first trip, was rescued by the Toward and taken to Halifax, Nova Scotia.
