Personal information
Son of William Maxwell, of Llandaff, Cardiff. Dilwyn M.R. Maxwell was interned by the Vichy French authorities after the sinking of Allende, released after four months and arrived in Bathurst on 16 July 1942. He was taken to Freetown from where he was repatriated to the UK aboard the Highland Monarch on 30 July. Dilwyn had run away to sea at the age of 14 and eventually became a master after the war.
