Personal information
Victor G. Archambault was born in Montreal and married when volunteering in 1939. His wife was pregnant with his first son when Victor was sent overseas and he did not see his child until returning in 1945.
Victor was aboard Devis and leaning on his friends shoulder when a group of them were playing cards. They were all killed. The explosion broke his back and knocked him unconscious. He later recounted that for some reason he came to and knew what was like to be in hell as everything was on fire. Victor also suffered third degree burns to his arms, hands and face because he climbed up the stairs that were no longer there as the burnt away. When he eventually reached the deck he could step into the ocean from the railings, because the ship was listing so badly. He was admitted to a hospital in North Africa after being rescued by a British destroyer.
