Personal information
Harry Umpleby was returning from South Africa as passenger aboard Duchess of Atholl following RAF crew training. He later recounted that the sea was covered with oranges after the sinking and that the U-boat surfaced afterwards. Since then he never ate another orange. After returning to the UK he was subsequently sent to Palestine/Egypt and served in 458 Squadron RAAF as a navigator on Wellington aircraft.
