He was a gunner aboard Beursplein when she was bombed and sunk by a German Fw200 Condor aircraft northwest of Ireland on 26 February 1941.

He was picked up by HMS Wallflower after the sinking of Abbekerk, transferred to Widestone and landed at New York.
