Personal information
Wilfred Irvin survived the sinking of Phemius. His son Timothy remembers that he talked a little about the incident. About how most of those killed were local guys sleeping on the deck of the ship. The U-Boat surfaced and gave them water and food. Courteous exchange. Then being picked up by a French corvette. He got home to England and having lost all his gear was given some money to buy new kit. While he was having lunch in Liverpool,
someone stole his jacket with all his money.
After the war Wilfred continued to work for Blue Funnel, then Straits Steamship out of Singapore; he was chief engineer on board the Rajah Brook. He died of a heart attack in September 1974.
