William George Bromley was returning from duty in Australia when he volunteered to escort internees back to the UK. He had been in Capetown, intended for another ship when they were transferred to the Abosso for this duty. His daughter Caroline recounted that he did not talk about the horrific events of the night of the sinking very much (he could not swim) but was interviewed by the Times newspaper about his experience in 1980. After his return to the UK he was given the task by his CO to write to and visit, if possible all the British RAF families who had lost loved ones. He found it very difficult, one member lived near his family in Camden. William had joined the RAF at the age of 18 and was trained as a gunnery expert with 220 Squadron, initially based at RAF Thornaby.
