Personal information
Lee B. Spearman was in the shower when the torpedo struck Excello and gave his life vest to another sailor who could not swim staying on board to locate another. He later remembered how U-181 surfaced and the Germans told them which way to sail to reach land. After coming home and meeting his future wife, he served in the Pacific aboard USS The Sullivans.
