Personal information
Carolus Josephus Suttles was born as the son of Bruno Suttels and Maria Ludovica Loete. He joined the Merchant Navy at the age of 17 and served as Lamp Trimmer aboard the ships of the Red Star Line where he was recorded under the name of Joseph Suttels, Charles Suttels or Karel-Joseph Suttels. Karel married Jacoba Antoinetta Bierens in Antwerp in 1909 and had at least one son: Pieter Joseph Suttels born 1910 in Antwerp.
