Whilst he was always very reluctant throughout his life to talk about the war, he did say that he was on a raft for 17 days before landing at Aruba. I believe the crew were then transferred to New Orleans, USA and taken north to Ellis Island, New York. He always had impaired hearing from the blast having been knocked unconscious. He was saved by a fellow crew member (information from family member).
