Personal information
Alexander Eddie later remembered: "The most frightening time was when the tanker California Standard following the British Promise in the convoy gave us a glancing blow after the torpedoing. By the time day light appeared the whole of the foredeck was awash and cargo was being displaced from the after tanks and running through the scuppers. Repairs to broken pipe work in the engine room took several hours as did preparing the after cargo pump room. A close call. Subsequent service earned me a Burma Star."
