Joined Gunners Detachment of Merchant Navy on 4 March 1942. He was one of the 13 survivors who were rescued by Cubango after the sinking of Breediijk.

He also served on the Dutch steam merchant Stad Maassluis as of 13 May 1943 and aboard the British steam merchant Fort Townshend, sailing between Halifax and the UK.
