Personal information

Duncan Turner of Toward had served for the full term of the First World War. In May 1939, he joined the Caledonia as Carpenter's Mate and continued to serve on the ship after she was requisitioned by the Admiralty as armed merchant cruiser HMS Scotstoun. He survived the sinking in June 1940 and later recalled how he and the other survivors were landed on the Clyde still wearing their Mae Wests and no shoes, some of the men took shelter on a train until they were able to make the journey home. Shortly after they climbed aboard the train, a railway guard came and put them get off as it was against policy for anybody to be on an immobile train at that point. It was an act he never forgot and barely forgave as they were cold and hungry and did not get anything to eat or drink until the next morning when the Salvation Army gave them tea and helped the men to get home.
