Brother of John Barett of Salford, Lancashire. James Patrick Barrett survived the sinking of Scottish Chief, but was admitted to a hospital in Durban after his rescue as he was suffering from pneumonia. After seven months he boarded the British steam merchant Ville d'Amiens as a passenger for repatration to the UK, however his health declined and he was admitted to a hospital at Capetown on 6 Jul, 1943. James died on 11 July in a monastery at the Cape of Good Hope and was buried in Woltemade Cemetery No 4.
