Personal information
Sidney Robert Bree had previously served as boatswain on Montrose and remained aboard when the ship was requisitioned as armed merchant cruiser HMS Forfar by the Royal Navy. He survived the sinking and was mentioned in despatches for saving the life of the executive officer, Commander R.G. Arnot, RNR.
Award Citation as published in London Gazette on 28 March 1941:
