Personal information
James Henry Donaldson rendered valuable assistance throughout the 50 hours while in the lifeboat from Empire Star in charge of the chief officer. He was an expert in boat sailing and rigged the jib which enabled the boat to run before the gale. After the rudder pintal broke he took the steering oar and remained at it for the greater part of the time in the boat. His cheerfulness and initiative and fine seamanship were an inspiration to all in the opinion of the chief officer.
