Personal information
Son of G.H. Knowles, Gomersal. George Herbert Knowles joined the Royal Navy in December 1897 and commanded several destroyers during the First World War, participating in the Battle of Jutland as commander of HMS Goshawk. He was mentioned in despatches for services in the evacuation of Gallipoli and awarded a DSO for his services in destroyer and torpedo boat flotillas. Retired as Rear-Admiral in October 1933. Recalled to active duty as commodore for convoys from November 1939 until April 1942. He then became naval officer in charge of the RN base at Lowestoft until his retirement on 1 Feb, 1945.
