Personal information
Award Citation as published in London Gazette on 3 February 1942:
The ship was torpedoed at night in a heavy sea. A boat load of 27 survivors got away in charge of the chief officer. They were 14 days on the open sea, during which time they made some 500 miles, braving intense cold, storms and hunger. It was due to the masterly seamanship of the chief officer and to his courage and resource that so many were brought to safety.
