Nicolaos Glitsos survived the sinking of Halcyon by rescuing himself on a raft together with the trimmer Grocas. Aged 66, he fell from a ladder into the sea while boarding the British Prestige but was saved by able seaman Edward Smith from the tanker who immediately jumped overboard to support him until both were rescued.
