Personal information
Husband of Frances Dodd. Benjamin Thomas Dodd survived the sinking of Harmonic by jumping overboard and swam to a lifeboat. He spent some time in Salvador before being repatriated via Rio de Janeiro. Several years after the war, Ben visited the Albert Dock Museum to see the naval section and recognized the voice of Carl Emmerman talking about his experiences as U-boat commander. When he tried to get in contact with Emmerman, his family told him that he had died, but another officer contacted him and told him that Emmerman would have been pleased to hear that the survivors of Harmonic had made it to Brazil. Ben regarded the U-boat commander as a gentleman who was just doing his job.
