Son of Edvard and Inger Leonora Eriksen, of Birkedalen, Aust-Agder. Erik Kåre Eriksen had been taken prisoner when the Norwegian motor tanker Teddy was captured by the German raider Atlantis in the Indian Ocean on 8 November 1940. The crew of the tanker was transferred to Ole Jacob, another Norwegian tanker captured by the same raider and released after arriving at Kobe, Japan on 8 December 1940.
