Award Citation as published in London Gazette on 3 July 1942:
The ship was torpedoed and caught fire. The engines could not be stopped and the Master and two Radio Officers, who were forward of the fire and could do nothing to stop the ship or help the crew, retreated to the forecastle head. The next morning the ship broke in two and they had to jump
into the sea but only the Master and one Radio Officer were picked up. That they
survived their terrible ordeal was largely due to the Master's courage and resource. By letting go both anchors, when the engines stopped, he kept the doomed ship head to
wind, so that the fire was blown away from the forecastle.
