After surviving the sinking of Almkerk Ary Romijn became master of the Aagtekerk in 1942. His ship was attacked in January and June, during which he was wounded but managed to save ship and cargo each time. For his actions he received the highest Netherlands decoration for gallantry, the Militaire Willems-Orde, Ridder 4e klasse.
