Personal information
Son of James Harkness and Jessie Lyon Herd; husband of Mary McLachlan Herd, of West Kilbride, Ayrshire. He had been standing just above the point of impact of the first torpedo that struck Memnon and died of shock and exposure in the lifeboat in charge of the chief officer on 20 March 1941 and was buried at sea about 30 miles north of St. Louis, French West Africa.
