Personal information
Harold Conley Chancey survived the sinking of USS Frederick C. Davis and was rescued by USS Hayter. He spent a time in hospital for "the ringing in his ears" caused by the torpedo explosion. His daughter is in the possession of a letter from a sailor who was in the hospital bed next to him and wanted the mother of Harold to know how much he appreciated her son, writing his letters home to his loved ones and holding a cigarette up for him to smoke because he was severely burned and his hands were bandaged.
