Duncan Campbell survived the sinking of
Vimeira and abandoned ship in the lifeboat of the master, who was taken prisoner by the U-boat. He was then in charge of the boat with 16 occupants. The next day they were picked up by the British steam merchant
Sylvia de Larrinaga which was torpedoed and sunk by the Italian submarine
Reginaldo Giuliani on 14 August. The men from
Vimeria abandoned ship in their own lifeboat and were picked up after 28 days by the
Siranger and eventually landed at Takoradi on 20 September. He was later awarded the MBE for his fine seamanship while in charge of the lifeboat.
