Personal information
Raymond Betteridge was the last man to abandon HMS Scotstoun before she sank, observing the Captain to jump over the rail before he did. Afterwards he served for a time on HMS Javelin as Able Seaman (Gun Layer 3rd class) on 4.7 inch guns. He also served on HMS Dulverton as Able Seaman (Gun Layer 3rd class) on 4 inch guns. While on this ship he was involved in the action against U-559 resulting in the capture of Enigma codebooks. Raymond also survived when HMS Dulverton was sunk by a German gilder bomb off Kos on 13 November 1943.
