Personal information
Karl Guðmundsson survived the sinking of the Hekla along with six other men although he was suffering of internal injuries. He then spent 10 days on a life raft before being saved by HMS Candytuft on 9 July. Although a doctor from another ship in the convoy stayed with him for a night he died of a sudden heart failure.
