Sigmundur Pálmason was one of the seven survivors who were picked up from a raft by HMS Candytuft ten days after the sinking of Hekla and were landed at St. John's, Newfoundland on 17 July. Four of the men spent 11 days in St. John's before heading to Sydney where they boarded the Icelandic passenger freighter Dettifoss and finally returned back to Iceland. The other two survivors, Sigurður Ólafsson and Valdimir Knopf Miller, spend more time in hospital, the former over 6 months.
