Harold Ennis served with the Royal London Fusiliers in Africa, but contracted malaria and was sent home to Scotland aboard Duchess of Atholl for recuperation when the ship was torpedoed and sunk. He survived the sinking and later recounted how the survivors in his lifeboat picked up oranges that had been part of the cargo and threw them at the U-boat when it surfaced.
