Husband of Mrs. N.R. Caird, of London. On 24 Nov, 1941, the British steam tanker Virgilia (Master Norman Ross Caird) was torpedoed and sunk by the German E-boat S-109 (Lt.z.S. Bosse) in convoy FS-654 east of Orfordness.
On 11 Aug, 1942, Norman Ross Caird was taken prisoner by U-109 after the sinking of Vimeira and remained 56 days aboard until arriving at Lorient on 6 October. He was taken to the POW camp Marlag und Milag Nord (POW No. 851).
