Personal information
Donald Gilbert Allen was given credit for saving the lives of the 15 men in his lifeboat after Steel Navigator was torpedoed. They were adrift in a lifeboat for seven days until they picked up by HMS Decoy on 26 October, 1942. The second lifeboat, with the master and 21 others aboard, was never found.
He would later become an Ensign in the US Navy and died when the escort carrier USS Liscome Bay was torpedoed by the Japanese submarine I-175 on 24 November, 1943.
