Son of Frank Herrling, of Cleveland, OH. He died of exposure in the lifeboat in charge of the chief mate of Alaskan and was buried at sea. The Liberty ship Fred Herrling was named after him, launched on 30 January 1945 at Jacksonville, FL and christened by his niece Mrs. Kenneth Jones.
