History | Completed November 1942, with the Hull built by Vancouver Dry Dock Co, for US War Shipping Administration (WSA), lend-leased on bareboat charter to British Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). | ||
Notes on event | At 04.14 hours on 23 Sep 1943, U-238 fired two T-3, two FAT and then another T-3 torpedo at convoy ON-202 south-southeast of Cape Farewell. Hepp reported four ships of 19.000 tons sunk and one damaged. However, only three ships, Oregon Express, Fort Jemseg and Skjelbred were hit and sunk. The master, 22 crew members and seven gunners from the Fort Jemseg (Master Leslie Joseph White) were picked up by HMS Northern Foam (4.76) (Lt H.G. Ross) and 22 crew members by the Norwegian merchant Romulus and landed at New York on 2 October. One crew member was lost. | ||
