Notes on event | At 07.30 hours on 14 July 1943 the unescorted and unarmed Harvard (Master Lawson Hooper) was stopped by U-572 from the port beam with two shots across her bow east of Trinidad. The crew immediately abandoned ship in two lifeboats and was questioned by the Germans, asking the usual question about name, cargo and destination and if there were tankers in Port of Spain, Trinidad. The U-boat then left after firing one round from the deck gun into the waterline of the schooner, which immediately disappeared in a big cloud of smoke at 07.50 hours. At 23.20 hours the same day, the survivors were picked up by the US Army transport USAT State of Virginia after being spotted by a US Navy blimp and landed at Georgetown in the evening of 15 July. | ||
