Notes on event

At 04.28 hours on 5 May 1943, U-358 fired one stern torpedo at a ship in convoy ONS-5 south of Cape Farewell, observed a hit amidships and the sinking of the ship in less than one minute. However, the Wentworth (Master Reginald Gilbert Phillips) remained afloat and was scuttled by HMS Loosestrife (K 105) (Lt H.A. Stonehouse) later that morning. Five crew members were lost. The master, 35 crew members and six gunners were picked up by the corvette and landed at St. Johns on 9 May.
