| Notes on event | At 08.14 hours on 21 April 1943 the Wanstead (Master William B. Johnston) in convoy ONS-3 was hit by one stern torpedo from U-415 (Neide) southeast of Cape Farewell. Two crew members were lost. The master, 40 crew members and seven gunners abandoned the burning ship and were picked up by HMS Poppy (K 213) (Lt N.K. Boyd, DSC) and HMS Northern Gift (4.50) (T/A/LtCdr A.J. Clemence, RNR) and landed at St. Johns. The corvette probably tried to scuttle the ship, but she remained afloat and was sunk by a coup de grâce from U-413 at 13.45 hours. | ||
