Notes on event

At 04.40 hours on 21 Dec 1939 the Rudolf (Master T. Bøtger) was hit in the aft part by one torpedo from U-46 about 110 miles east-northeast of Rattray Head and settled quickly by the stern while the survivors abandoned ship in two lifeboats. The ship had been hit by a dud about 10 minutes earlier. Six men in one boat were picked up by Biarritz after sailing 150 miles and landed at Antwerp. Nine survivors in the other boat were picked up by the Norwegian steam merchant Bjerka (Master Thorolf Christensen) and taken to Kopervik.
