During 18/19 June 1942, several ships from Task Force 44, the heavy cruisers HMAS Canberra (Capt. F.E. Getting, RAN, flying the flag of Rear-Admiral V.A.C. Crutchley, VC, DSC, RN), Salt Lake City (Capt. E.G. Small, USN) and the destroyers USS Henley (Lt.Cdr. R.H. Smith, USN, with Cdr. L.B. Austin, USN, commanding Destroyer Division 7 on board) and USS Bagley (Lt.Cdr. G.A. Sinclair, USN) conducted exercises off Brisbane. (1)

Rear-Admiral V.A.C. Crutchley, VC, DSC, RN, transferred his flag from HMAS Canberra (Capt. F.E. Getting, RAN) to HMAS Australia (Capt. H.B. Farncomb, RAN). (1)
