Career information
Henry 'Ben' PEATE was born in Oswestry, Shropshire on 29th August 1903 into the family of wealthy millers. His father, Andrew, was Mayor of Oswestry and their family home was shelf bank. Educated at a floating naval training school, The Conway, he started his maritime career with the Bibby Line. He joined the RNR to supplement his meagre mercantile marine pay, and never looked back. Your details for his commands are correct. He served on submarines, corvettes and troopships. A member of Combined Operations, he was a veteran of Dieppe, Operation Husky and Operation Avalanche. He raided the French coast with Lord LOVAT's Commandos on numerous occasions. He also picked up the raiders from the Bruneval Raid. His DSC was awarded for his planning and execution of the Commando raid on the Bay of Aggione in Italy. He landed troops later in his career at Korea and Suez. He suffered in later life from the effects of witnessing the Christmas Island atomic bomb tests. Married to Helen, father to Gillian and grandfather to three (including myself). A typical naval man, he seldom talked of his war(s) and had a innate capacity for 'backing out of the limelight'.
