Career information
Gordon Bridson was born in Feilding New Zealand in December 1909, a Champion swimmer he represented New Zealand at the Empire Games in 1930 and return with two Silver medals. Afer his time on Walnut, he captained the HMNZS Kiwi. Operating in the Pacific under the auspices of the USA, Bridson rammed and sunk a I1 Japanese submarine on 29 January 1943. When the Submarine was dived on and searched freshly released code books of the new Japanese naval codes were found.

HMNZS Kiwi (Lt.Cdr. G. Bridson, RNZNVR), along with her sister ship HMNZS Moa (Lt.Cdr. P. Phipps, RNZNVR), engage and sink the Japanese submarine I-1 at Kamimbo Bay, Guadalcanal. (1)
