Career information
Andrew graduated from Harvard Military Academy in Beverly Hills in 1929, and Stanford University in 1936.
He commanded the following ships: USS Firecrest (AMc 33) from 24 September 1941 to 28 March 1942. USS YMS-89 from 23 June 1942 to 29 March 1943. USS Swerve (AM 121) from 23 January 1944 to 9 July 1944. USS Stansbury (DMS 8) from 11 May 1945 to 11 December 1945. USS Celeno (AK 76) from 20 December 1945 to 2 March 1946. USS Tate (AKA 70) from 15 March 1946 to 10 July 1946.
Medals awarded to Commander Andrew Morthland: American Defense (1 star) American Area Asiatic-Pacific Area (2 stars) European-African (1 star) Philippine Liberation (1 star) World War II Victory.
In November 1946, Commander Andrew Morthland went on Reserve Status.
In October 1951, Andrew received a letter from the Chief of Naval Personnel, in which he was asked to serve as Convoy Commodore and Vice Commodore in the event of mobilization, to which he agreed. From 1953-61, he took seventeen correspondent courses from the Naval War College to keep up to date. As of July 23, 1971, his 60th birthday, Andrew officially retired from the Naval Reserves.
