German U-boat U-111 was sunk south-west of Tenerife, in position 27°15'N, 20°27'W,Damaged by depth charges and then shelled by the British anti-submarine trawler HMS Lady Shirley (Lt.Cdr. A.H. Callaway, RANVR).
4 Oct 1941
LADY SHIRLEY did not sink U 111 by depth charges. After ping a four charge pattern the submarine surfaced and was sunk after a gun action. LADY SHIRLEY was armed with a four inch gun, not a 12 pdr.
