Convoy HX 48.
This convoy departed Halifax on 5 June 1940.
It was made up of the following merchant vessels; Atlantic (British, 5414 GRT, built 1939), Barrington Court (British, 4910 GRT, built 1924), Beaconlight (Panamanian, 6954 GRT, built 1920), Cairnglen (British, 5019 GRT, built 1926), Calliope (Panamanian (tanker), 8744 GRT, built 1926), Carmefjell (Norwegian, 1334 GRT, built 1935), City of Oran (British, 7323 GRT, built 1915), Clearpool (British, 5405 GRT, built 1935), Dakotian (British, 6426 GRT, built 1922), Dalcroy (British, 4558 GRT, built 1930), Esmond (British, 4976 GRT, built 1930), Harpagon (British, 5719 GRT, built 1935), Inginer N. On departure from Halifax the convoy was escorted by the armed merchant cruiser HMS Ranpura (A/Capt.(Retd.) R.I. Money, RN), destroyer HMCS Saguenay (Cdr. G.R. Miles, RCN) and the auxiliary patrol vessel (former survey vessel) HMCS Acadia (Lt.Cdr. H.G. Shadforth, RCNR).
Around 2145Q/5, HMCS Saguenay and HMCS Acadia parted company to return to Halifax.
During the night of 5 / 6 June, the Calliope dropped out of the convoy. She returned to Halifax.
During the night of 6 / 7 June the Victo dropped out of the convoy. She arrived in the Downs on 21 June.
During the night of 7 / 8 June the Carmelfjell dropped out of the convoy. She arrived at Portland on 19 June.
Around 1400P/10, Convoy BHX 48 joined convoy HX 48. The following merchant vessels now joined the convoy; Benjamin Franklin (Norwegian, 7034 GRT, built 1927), Bente Maersk (British (tanker), 5772 GRT, built 1928), Caledonia (British (tanker), 9892 GRT, built 1936), Capulet (British (tanker), 8190 GRT, built 1932), D.L. Harper (British (tanker), 12223 GRT, built 1933), Eclipse (British (tanker), 9767 GRT, built 1931), G.S. Walden (British (tanker), 10627 GRT, built 1937), Miralda (British (tanker), 8013 GRT, built 1936), Nicolaou Georgios (Greek, 4108 GRT, built 1930), Patella (British (tanker), 7468 GRT, built 1927), Politician (British, 7939 GRT, built 1923), Refast (British (tanker) 5189 GRT, built 1914), Robert F. Hand (British (tanker), 12197 GRT, built 1933), Sourabaya (British (tanker / whale factory ship), 10107 GRT, built 1915) and W.B. Walker (British (tanker), 10468 GRT, built 1935).
Around 1233O/12, in position 45°16'N, 35°32'W, the Eclipse, loaded with crude oil for Brest, was detached to proceed Paulsboro, New Jersey, USA. This as per Admiralty orders. She however arrived at Port Arthur, Texas on 26 June.
P.M. on the 15th, in position 50°00'N, 20°05'W, the Stangrant dropped out of the convoy with engine trouble. She arrived at Liverpool on 19 June.
Around 2030A/16, in approximate position 50°00'N, 15°00'W, the destroyer HMS Volunteer (Lt.Cdr. N. Lanyon, RN) joined the convoy. HMS Ranpura then parted company to return to Halifax.
Around 0530A/17, in approximate position 50°00'N, 13°00'W, the corvette HMS Gladiolus (Lt.Cdr. H.M.C. Sanders, RNR) joined the convoy.
The convoy was split up later that day.
The Irish Sea / west coast section was made up of the following merchant vessels; Atlantic (arrived at Manchester on 20 June), Barrington Court (arrived at Manchester on 20 June), Benjamin Franklin (arrived at Liverpool on 19 June), Caledonia (arrived in the Clyde on 20 June), Clearpool (arrived in Barry Roads on 19 June), Dakotian (arrived at Avonmouth on 20 June), Dalcroy (arrived at Liverpool on 19 June), Esmond (arrived at Avonmouth on 20 June), G.S. Walden (arrived in the Clyde on 20 June), Harpagon (arrived at Cardiff on 20 June), Janeta (arrived at Newport on 19 June), Laristan (arrived in the Clyde on 20 June), Margarita Chandris (arrived at Liverpool on 20 June), Parthenia (arrived in the Clyde on 20 June), Pathella (arrived in the Clyde on 20 June), Patia (arrived at Liverpool on 19 June), Politician (arrived at Liverpool on 20 June), Polydorus (arrived at Liverpool on 19 June), Robert F. Hand (arrived in the Clyde on 20 June), Sourabaya (arrived in the Clyde on 20 June), Torr Head (arrived at Belfast on 20 June), Tynebank (arrived at Liverpool on 19 June) and W.B. Walker (arrived in the Clyde on 20 June). They were escorted by HMS Volunteer which arrived at Liverpool on 19 June.
The Channel / east coast section was made up of the following merchant vessels; Beaconlight (arrived at Southampton on ? June), Bente Maersk (arrived in the Downs on 20 June), Cairnglen (arrived in the Downs on 20 June), Capulet (arrived at Plymouth on 19 June), City of Oran (arrived in the Downs on 20 June), D.L. Harper (arrived at Southampton on 20 June), Inginer N. Vlassopol (arrived in the Downs on 20 June), Kingsborough (arrived in the Downs on 20 June), Miralda (arrived at Weymouth on 20 June), Nicolaou Georgios (destination was Brest, arrival date not known, later went to Liverpool arriving on 27 June), Refast (arrived in the Downs on 20 June) and San Cirilo (arrived in the Downs on 20 June). They were escorted by HMS Gladiolus which arrived at Dover on 20 June. (1)
