Career information
During Typhoon Cobra starting from Dec 17 1944 Lt.Cdr. Henry Lee Plage, commanding the destroyer escort USS Tabberer (DE 418), rescued 93 survivors from sunken destroyers USS Hull, USS Monahan and USS Spence. Plage disobeyed several direct orders by fleet Commander Nimitz to regroup task force 38 and USS Tabberer continued to search for survivors for 3 days despite being at times in need of help herself. The typhoon cost the lives of 790 American sailors. Despite disobeying Nimits and thus continue to rescue survivors Plage was awarded the Legion of Merit for his heroic efforts to both save his own ship and help others (more on Typhoon Cobra at Wikipedia).
