Destroyer USS Jarvis (i) (DD 393)
9 Aug 1942
The USS Jarvis was hit by an aerial torpedo while escorting troopships at the Guadalcanal landings. It opened a hole 50 feet long in her boiler room. After emergency repairs, she attempted to set sail at a speed of 8 knots for Brisbane when Japanese dive-bombers torpedoed her. The destroyer broke in two and sank with the entire 247-man crew. (1)
