Career information
During the naval battle of Guadalcanal on 13 Nov 1942 the heavy cruiser USS San Francisco was hit and its captain, Captain Cassin Young, was killed along with all officers and Rear Admiral Daniel J. Callaghan commanding the US forces. Lt.Cdr. McCandless was the only surviving officer and assumed command of the ship for the rest of the battle.
